About the Mountain Bike Leader award
The award is in two stages, the training course followed by a 1 day assessment.
“On successful completion of MBL assessment the participant will be sufficiently skilled in mountain bike leading to lead groups within Scotland and the UK as detailed below:-
· Public highways, way marked routes, rights of way on which cycles are permitted, identifiable routes, tracks and trails with obvious navigational features
· routes are at least 90-95% rideable of their total length.
· Terrain more than 30 minutes walk from the nearest accessable road or shelter from were it is possible to summon help (ie within AALS licensable terrain)
· Terrain matched to the skills and riding competencies of MBL
· Any height above sea level or open moorland
· Normal summer conditions, during daylight
· Multi day trips where the group does not require to be self sufficient. (MBLA remit)
Mountain Bike Leader Training (ratio 1:8)
We can offer three types of MBL course to suit your needs:-
Standard course
2 days (usually over a weekend)
Longer course & Residential courses are also available for private hire / group booking.
Mountain Bike Leader Assessment (ratio 1:4)
We offer a 1 day MBL assessment. Candidates can apply for an assessment date a minimum of 30 days after their training course.
“Candidates should be effective in mountain bike leading on applying for assessment. They should be familiar with the course requirements and syllabus, as detailed in the course materials. An outline of the assessment procedures and criteria will be provided on the training courses.
Candidates will be assessed in the following areas:- Clothing & Equipment, Planning & Preparation, Personal Performance (bike skills), Dealing with Emergencies, Navigation, Countryside Awareness, Leadership, Fitness, Fuel & Hydration, Trailside Repairs and Bike set-up”. (MBLA remit)
