About the SMBLA
Trail Cycle Leader and Mountain Bike Leader
The scheme offers awards at two levels, the Trail Cycle Leader (TCL) and the Mountain Bike Leader (MBL). Each covers mountain biking skills, repairs and cycle set-up, navigation and leadership.

The Trail Cycle Leader Award consists of a training course, followed by a one day assessment. Holders of a Trail Cycle Leader Award can progress to a Mountain Bike Leader, with a further training course and one day assessment.

Expedition, Night Riding and new Winter Conditions Modules are available to qualified TCL & MBL award holders.

SMBLA Training
Our SMBLA tutors offer training and assessments for those who wish to become qualified in leading Mountain Biking.; Cycle 4 Adventure has the following courses available (click on the course title for further information):-

Trail Cycle Leader – On successful completion of TCL assessment the participant will be sufficiently skilled in mountain bike leading to lead groups of up to 6 riders throughout Scotland and the UK as detailed below:-

Public highways, way-marked routes, rights-of-way on which cycles are permitted, identifiable routes, tracks and trails with obvious navigational features and with low to medium technical difficulty. The award covers normal summer conditions. These routes will be 90-95% rideable and take the group no more than 30 minutes walk by a reasonably fit person away from a shelter with communication, and to be no more than 600 metres in height. They will not involve cycling activity of more than one day’s length.

Mountain Bike Leader – On successful completion of MBL assessment the participant will be sufficiently skilled in mountain bike leading to lead groups within Scotland and the UK as detailed below:-

Public highways, way marked routes, rights of way on which cycles are permitted, identifiable routes and tracks with obvious navigational features, routes requiring considerable technical ability which are rideable for 90-95% of their total length. The award covers normal summer conditions.

Multi-day trips*, and to any height above sea level and more than 30 minutes walk from the nearest shelter with communication. Multi-day trips will cover the carrying of additional equipment and planning and management of groups on such trips.

(*Note expeditions, camp craft and the leadership and management of self-sufficient groups in expedition situations will be covered in an additional, 2 day expedition course with continual assessment)

Night Riding Module – These modules are open to all Trail Cycle Leaders (TCL) and Mountain Bike Leaders (MBL) with current BC membership and first aid qualification, to enable them to work in conditions outside the original remit of their award.

The Night Riding module builds on the TCL and MBL syllabus covering:
Trailside repairs in darkness, night navigation, clothing and equipment, dealing with emergencies, group control, bike lights, bike preparation and planning.

Expedition Module – allows holders of TCL or MBL qualifications to lead groups in multi day expeditions within their terrain remit.

NEW FOR 2009 - Winter Conditions Module - enables holders of TCL or MBL qualifications to work in defined ’intermediate’ and ‘winter’ conditions, but operate only in TCL terrain regardless of the level of award that they hold.
